Most people are using a free model, stable diffusion, and don't try to sell the art, so even if they reproduce something close enough to actual count copyright infringement, it still wouldn't because they aren't being used commercially. People take inspiration for everything they see, by your logic anything people produce is just an amalgamation of other people's work without there consent.

It has amazing potential to make the world a better place if used responsibly. I still think AI art should be banned in its current state. The issue is that every model out there has been trained on copyrighted works without the consent of the artists that made them. It is a new ethics issue particular to AI that has only just started being examined in the courts. AI companies are effectively profiting off of the work of other people. It is also possible to show, using specific prompts, that these models can reproduce copyrighted works of other artists. So it is not so much learning to make art like a human does, as it is randomly making pixels based off probability patterns it's seen before in other people's art. Also, the claim that "prompt engineering" is a skill that is on-par with spending decades of practice making actual original art is laughable at best, insulting at worst.

xzhacker 12/31/2022 12:57:15 PM Rating: 2 I don't consider myself an artist, but at the same time I think I'm talented at getting the ai to do what I want. It's a different skill in my opinion. I don't think that it should be banned, but I do think it should be tagged. As far as the "Frankenstein" I suggest you actually look into the tech, that's a gross oversimplification of something that's actually radically complex, and actually quite similar to how real people learn.

Eliek 12/31/2022 9:24:10 AM Rating: 6 The issue is AI is taking bits and pieces of actual artists works, and frankensteining them together without *any* permission of the artists it it taking from. That plus people are literally using it to *copy* artists works by throwing tons of their images into it so it can learn their style. Hell, there is even a case of someone going to an artists stream, screenshotting the unfinished image throwing it into an AI to "complete" it then posted their version AND THEN tried to DMCA the actual artists image as a copy of their stolen art. But, you are correct in that AI is a tool, but simply generating an image and being done with it isn't the way to go. If you, say, took this and used it akin to how an artist uses a sketch (as in, you take this as a base, then you manually tweak it, fix issues like her hands and her horrible face that looks like she has two faces smooshed together) that's another story. It can also be used to enhance images you've drawn. But to simply.....type a few words and make an image and try to call yourself as talented as an artist who has spent thousands of hours honing their skill is an insult to said artists. Or heck, it can even be used to generate an image like this that you can then give to an artist you want to commission as a reference of "here is what I'd like you to draw". Uses like that are fine, but it shouldnt be passed off as a finished product or on par with an actual artists work. I would like to see AI not posted here, at least not AI that isn't used properly as a tool rather than a replacement for actually creating or commissioning art. But as it stands, images like this are using stolen assets from other artists pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle and without getting permission from the people it is taking from.

Like all art getting it to look good actually takes talent and dedication. As someone with aphantasia, I love that I now have a tool that lets me put my ideas down in a way that others (and myself) can actually see. Please cool it with ai hate, some of have been wanting a tool that lets us actually do something that looks decent in this space for a long time. No one thinks ai is actually replacing real artists. Just like photography didn't kill painting, the fine details are something ai just can't get right. Just the other day I couldn't finish something I was working on for an RPG I ran, because the ai is kinda dumb, so I asked one of my players, a very talented artist to finish up for me.
