I've been a killer of poor criticism before so I'm going to do my best to offer a kind and decent criticism of this piece~ I apologize if it's offensive...

The color choice is questionable- but I'd forgive it if there was some form of consistency- There are multiple spots where the color is left white when it should be colored in- and spots where you can tell
MsPaintGTS 6/3/2014 9:13:09 PM Rating: 8

*comment got cut off*

That the coloring was done by a bucket tool- There are white artifacts around the lines where the tool failed to fill in- the types of artifacts that you will find within MsPaint if you do a poor coloring job- or save it in the default .JPG format...

There could be a significant number of improvments with this- and I'd really be surprised if this took more than a couple of minutes- Though- AGAIN- I will not be attacking how much time was spent- rather the improper job of coloring SB's picture..

I happen to be a fan of SB's work (I'm even working on an art-trade with him) - I thoroughly believe the black and white version of this piece in default is better than this one with a few splashed colors..

The version is available here- If anyone cares to take a look. http://giantessbooru.com/post/view/174975?search=smushedboy

MsPaintGTS

i did the colouring in by using gimp i COULD get rid of the little white spots BUT then i would be have to get rid of the wrinkles/lines as well picking hair colour and such

this was NOT a slap dash job i took care in getting the skin colour to look right as well as the outfit

kuji 6/4/2014 7:01:21 AM Rating: 4

if it insults you SO much seeing little white lines then i will go back and get rid of them
MsPaintGTS 6/4/2014 7:19:44 AM Rating: 8

A simple way to not get rid of detail lines when coloring in- Is to use layers. If you use a selection tool on a high-translucency setting- you can grasp an area and then use a layer below the main line area to color in- This allows you to color it without messing up your linework.

Canucks pictures is a good example of this- Notice how well preserved the original lines are.

Very nicely done Canuck :)

Thanks! Also, like MsPaintGTS said, layers are key. Good attempt, I'm always learning new things in Photoshop and the like.

As far as I know, mods cannot delete comments. Not at least in my rank. :P

Anyway, about criticism... One thing: once you make something public, it becomes a moving target for critics of any kind. That's one fact you have to face, although it is true not everyone can take criticism the same way. Some are more sensitive than others.

Now, you have to be careful with your reactions as well. After all, the Internet is a big place where rights and wrongs can be magnified. Even if you are upset when you see someone critic your work, don't reply right away. Take your time, just a minute or two, take a deep breath, and think.

Also, remember - though I hope we all are sensible enough to already know this: criticism towards your art isn't a personal attack against you.
MsPaintGTS 6/5/2014 5:00:41 PM Rating: 6

Chuck- Your making an assumption that anyones opinion on an art piece- In a negative light- Should be considered a criticism in the first piece. Which they simply should not be unless they are intelligible! - A criticism should include an analysis and a judgement- Not just a blatant heavily opinionated judgement. It's even within the definition of criticism in relation to art "the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work."

If they just have a negative opinion to speak without substance they are only causing harm. Though they still have every right to state it.... Those that fall into this category ARE taking an attack against you.

And while critics aren't necessarily meaning to personally attack you- some of the meaner hearted ones do it anyways, so covering it in such a broad statement as 'Criticism is just something you have to deal with'~ Is kinda silly. Especially when someone who is posting there artwork for free may only be looking for gentle and kind-hearted support, rather than mean short stabs of unjustified and hateful opinion.
Chuck 6/5/2014 5:43:45 PM Rating: 2

It isn't just "criticism exists, deal with it". As I said, it is also the fact you react to it. If you just have to put up with it, well, it's a very passive way. And as I said, not everyone deals with it the same one. Some are more sensitive than others.

The case one states might not work for others. I'm pretty sure my way of "critics exist no matter what, but I won't give up, I'll just read it several times before I properly reply to them, and then go back to work, because I can do it, even better and harder" won't work for many others.

Many friends of mine have been my worst critics and have taught me more than I'd ever think. But, as I said, many artists, many ways. I was, of course, talking from my own experience.

Also, I apologize for just focusing on criticism, on actual criticism. Of course, there's also the simple opinion, the comment... And those which are more visceral, and sometimes harsh. True that. Not everything is nice and you have to find your way to deal with that as well.

I'm not saying "it exists and you have nothing to do", I'm saying "it exists, find a way to deal with it, I have mine and is this one". I'm not telling people to cross their arms, but to relax before dealing with the subject.
Chuck 6/6/2014 9:45:41 AM Rating: 0

Oh, no, I didn't ignore or forget what you said about what an art critic is - or more like should be - in theory. In fact, I apologized for not seeing that you were also talking about people who aren't critics, just giving their opinions, like them or not. Sure a critic goes deeper when looking at someone's work... I think we can pretty much see it, all of us.

It's just that: we have different points of view on the same matter. We can't always agree in everything. That would make things boring. :P
MsPaintGTS 6/6/2014 5:23:39 PM Rating: 4

Haha- Good good. *bows*

It's very rare I'm able to carry on such a good conversation with anyone, I'm glad we kept it on an intelligent side.. And we actually reached an agreement here. As your points have stated-the lack of agreement in the first place was simply mis-communication...

Brilliant!- Well... I'm off to make more art then.

I bid you a fine farewell~
