This implies that there are other's outside the scene.
I think it is quite possible with those predatory eyes that they are looking at someone larger. If the main subject thought they were going to have bragging rights to lord over some one, then they might have that same look.
I think it's much more believe-able than sharks-and-minnows-taken-too-far, simply because of where the main subject here is looking.
