Artists can set a minimum "donation" amount to unlock content. If the artist produces something you would be willing to pay for regularly then Patreon would be a good way to go, but if the artist only produces one offs you like then looking for a stand alone set or comic issue to be sold separately seems like a better route to get what you want.
