For as long as there had been growth rays the city had had a countermeasure in place. A large mobile shrink way, capable of stopping any rampaging giant or giantess in their tracks - no matter their size.
The existence of the shrink ray had stood in the way of Mady's dreams. She wanted to be giant, to be huge, for the buildings to shake to her footsteps. She wanted to dominate the city and all the little lives inside. But she knew that the shrink ray would always stop her.
Getting a hold of a growth ray was easy. The existence of the shrink ray made them worthless, Mady had several in her home which she would occasionally toy with and dream about using one day. Getting a shrink ray was harder - but not impossible. Of course, Mady had never considered getting one before, why would she - until she was struck by an idea.
It took some work but she finally managed to pick up a shrink ray up from some black market dealer. As soon as she got it home she enacted her plan. At regular intervals she blasted herself with the shrink ray, small blasts at first but she cranked the power up each time. After a while she was half her usual height, then a quarter. Soon she was like a doll - then ant sized. She'd set the shrink ray to fire at intervals so all she had to do was make sure she stayed in front of it.
Soon she was microscopic but kept going. Eventually she achieved her goal... she was being struck by the shrink ray - but she was no longer shrinking. Mady had built up an immunity to the beam. She was now ready for phase 2 of her plan.

It was a quiet day when the now giant Mady emerged from her building, its crumbling remains cascading over her gigantic form. She'd hit herself with every growth beam she'd owned and had become the tallest thing in the city.
"Hello bugs!" she boomed, enjoying the sight of her now enormous body, "I'm your new nightmare!"
As the city was shook by her laughter the Giant-response team predictably arrived with the shrink ray. From the glow as it powered up, Mady knew they were going to hit her full blast.
Suddenly the city turned blue as the beam arced across and struck the giantess - then... nothing. A second beam fired and again... nothing. Soon after this the screams from below started, the little people had learned not to fear the giants and giantesses as they would soon be cut down to size - but now they saw their defense was useless against Mady.
"Oh dear, is that all you've got?" smirked Mady.
This must have pissed off the giantess-response team who now fired a barrage of full-power blasts at Mady. Each blast did nothing as before and afterwards Mady's smirk grew into a full smile.
"You fools, you can't shrink me back, I..." Mady suddenly looked down at herself realizing something had changed.
The city held its breath, had the shrink ray worked? There was a large snap as one of Mady's straps pinged out from her clothes.
"Oh my God!" she squealed as she worked out what happened, "I'm growing!"
The screams in the city grew louder as they saw that their defenses had not only failed to stop the giantess, they'd made her stronger. As Mady grew larger, her laughter became louder. This was better than she could have ever hoped for, her body had not only grown resilient to the shrink rays - it had learnt to convert their energy for growth.
Had Mady's giantess desires influenced her body to develop this ability, or was it just a natural evolution from building a resilience to the size-changing energies at work? Mady didn't care - she was now giant, and nothing could stop her.

The first draft of this story had a convoluted plot around switching shrink energy with growth energy and how the shrink ray causing the giantess to grow was part of her plan. I think I prefer this as its a bit simpler.
The original collage I made for this was one of the best I'd ever done. The model and the city lined up perfectly, man - you should have seen it. The AI upscale from my recovered thumbnail has done a good job at restoring it, but its not as great as the original - oh well.
