Honestly when it comes to these kinds of situations, it doesn't matter how its handled, there will always be people who get angry how the situation is handled (Like Mark said above "damned if you do and damned if you don't.")
I don't agree with the fact the picture being taken down just to remove all the comment chain (Which was pretty tame for a internet argument.) However I also don't blame the mods for the deletion when they are just trying to keep the peace.
I have been saying this for awhile now but once again I will say it again because I truly believe it could help the site dramatically, that this site needs to be updated with new features. Some of them should be:
1) A user blocking system. So many arguments and flame wars brake out on this site (Normally from the same few people) that it would quickly end alot of the flame wars before they even start if we can just block the users we would not like to see comments from.
2) A tag blocking system. Once again I see snide comments on pictures just because they don't like the subject matter (which in turn start arguments that really shouldn't have even begun).
3) Better user interface. Right now this website runs pretty much on bare bones and it has been since the beginning. I mean whats the point of the voting buttons on these comments if you also cant vote down? Its like the stupid youtube comment thumbs up but no thumbs down. Also this might just affect me, but a "delete all" option for the PM's should be implemented. Awhile ago some troll spammed a few users "including me" for like 2 hours and as such, I have a little more then 700 PMs that have been sitting there cause all I could do is delete them one by one which is pretty ridiculous.
Also this is not a necessity but I do believe it would help alot, I think there should be a chat room feature implemented. This would end the need (for the most part) to lock down comment threads or out right delete the picture in its entirely due to the fact that the users who want to argue could just go to the chat room where they would not be forever permanent on a comment chain. Also more users may feel like they can join in the conversations in a chat room, rather a comment chain.
