AI is a very useful tool, and I've personally created and used them in the past as part of my career. It has amazing potential to make the world a better place if used responsibly.
I still think AI art should be banned in its current state.
The issue is that every model out there has been trained on copyrighted works without the consent of the artists that made them. It is a new ethics issue particular to AI that has only just started being examined in the courts. AI companies are effectively profiting off of the work of other people.
It is also possible to show, using specific prompts, that these models can reproduce copyrighted works of other artists. So it is not so much learning to make art like a human does, as it is randomly making pixels based off probability patterns it's seen before in other people's art.
Also, the claim that "prompt engineering" is a skill that is on-par with spending decades of practice making actual original art is laughable at best, insulting at worst.
